Barely Standing at Five Months Old: Undi’s Gentle Fight to Stay Alive

Found When He Had Almost Nothing Left

Undi was just five months old when he was found on the road, exhausted and trembling. His body was thin, but his belly was swollen far beyond what was normal. Each step looked unsteady, as if standing alone required more strength than he had left.

The cold had taken its toll. So had the loneliness. Undi looked like a puppy who had been surviving for far too long without help.

Urgent Care at the Shelter

Undi was rushed to veterinary care, where doctors quickly realized how fragile his condition was. He was severely anemic, dangerously weak, and unable to lie down comfortably. The swelling in his abdomen was so firm that sitting upright was the only position he could manage.

More than three liters of fluid were carefully drained from his belly. Even then, the swelling did not disappear completely—signaling that his body was still fighting something deeper.

Searching for Answers

Treatment began immediately. Antibiotics were started after blood work revealed an elevated white blood cell count. Further scans and tests followed, focusing on his heart and abdomen. Veterinarians suspected possible liver involvement or a congenital condition, but answers would take time.

For now, the goal was simple: keep Undi stable, comfortable, and supported.

Strength That Couldn’t Be Measured

Despite the pain and difficulty moving, Undi showed a gentle, trusting spirit. He responded to touch. He ate well when food was offered. Most of all, he found comfort falling asleep in the arms of his caregiver, Biagio, surrounded by calm voices and steady care.

At the shelter in Dublin—supported by the team at Dublin Shelter—Undi was no longer facing his struggle alone.

Finding Warmth and Belonging

As his condition stabilized, Undi was introduced to a small group of other dogs. He adjusted quietly, showing friendliness and trust despite everything his body had endured. Surrounded by companions and people who watched over him closely, he finally had what he had been missing most: safety.

The road ahead remains uncertain. More tests are planned, and recovery will take time. But today, Undi is warm. He is cared for. And he is no longer invisible.

A Story Still Being Written

Undi’s journey is not finished—but his story already speaks clearly. Compassion does not always arrive with answers. Sometimes it arrives with patience, gentle hands, and the determination to stay beside someone through the unknown.

For Undi, that has made all the difference.
