Footprints in a frozen place
On a bitter winter day in Mladenovac, Serbia, Dog Rescue Shelter Mladenovac received a call about a dog seen sleeping inside a roadside drainage pipe. When the rescue team arrived, the road was covered in thick snow. They followed a trail of small paw prints until they reached a single opening where the snow had not settled.

That was where the warmth had been hiding.

A mother who didn’t run away
As the rescuers stepped closer, a gray-coated mother dog with striking blue eyes emerged from the pipe. Instead of retreating, she approached them calmly, tail moving with relief. It was as if she had been waiting. When a flashlight shone into the darkness behind her, three tiny puppies could be seen huddled deep inside—shivering, silent, and afraid.

They were alive.
But winter was closing in.

When fear kept them hidden
Getting the puppies out proved difficult. The team tried guiding the mother back into the pipe, hoping the puppies would follow her. They didn’t move. Next, the mother was placed somewhere warm, and food was offered to the puppies. Still, they stayed hidden, pressed farther into the darkness.

The light began to fade.
And time mattered.

Finally, the team tried something different. One rescuer positioned himself at the far end of the pipe, gently encouraging the puppies forward with a long branch. Slowly, cautiously, the puppies moved—one by one—toward waiting hands. After a long stretch of patience, all three were safely brought out: two males and one female.

Making sure no one was left behind
Before leaving, a rescuer crawled inside the pipe to check for any others. The surrounding snow was searched carefully. When it was finally clear that the family was complete, the team prepared to go.

Warmth after the cold
By nightfall, the dogs arrived at the shelter. The mother was named Hera. Her puppies, about four weeks old, were placed beside her in a warm crate lined with straw. Food, care, and medical checks followed—simple comforts that made all the difference.

For the first time, they slept without the cold pressing in.

A calm ending, and hope ahead
The video closes with Hera tending to her puppies in safety, relaxed and trusting. The fear of winter had been replaced by warmth and routine. When the puppies are old enough, the shelter hopes each will find a home willing to offer the care Hera fought so hard to secure.
