In Bosnia, city shelters built to house 300 dogs were forced to contain nearly 1,200. Overcrowding, stress, and inadequate care turned these facilities into silent prisons. For many dogs, the future behind those gates felt uncertain and frightening.
But for one man, that bark became a turning point.
A Life That Wasn’t Always About Animals
Six years ago, Bruno Jelovic had no connection to animal rescue.
He was a tattoo artist, focused on his craft, living an ordinary life.
Everything changed the day he adopted Mia, a small French Bulldog who quietly transformed his world.
Through Mia, Bruno discovered something he hadn’t fully understood before — the depth of loyalty, trust, and unconditional love a dog offers.
And once he felt it, he couldn’t ignore what was happening to others just like her.
The Birth of “Save The Dogs BiH”
What began as heartbreak turned into action.
Bruno founded the nonprofit organization Save The Dogs BiH with one clear promise: to rescue as many dogs as possible from overcrowded city shelters and from the streets before they ended up there.
The first rescue was a dog named Embolo.
When Embolo stepped out of the shelter and into Bruno’s vehicle, it wasn’t just a transfer of location — it was a moment of freedom.
A new beginning.
And it would not be the last.
Building a Haven Where Fear Turns Into Freedom
Rescuing dogs was only the first step.

Bruno knew they needed more than escape — they needed safety, healing, and dignity.
He built Rescue Ranches.
The first ranch became home to 200 dogs.
Soon, a second ranch was created, capable of housing 400 to 500 more.
Today, Bruno and his team care for around 850 dogs.
Many arrive weak, undernourished, matted, or injured. Some carry physical scars. Others carry invisible emotional wounds.
Each one receives medical care, vaccinations, proper food, and something even more important — patience.
No cages.
No overcrowded cells.
Just open space.
Sunlight.
Grass.
And time to remember what it feels like to be a dog.
Restoring Pride, One Dog at a Time
At the ranch, dogs run freely.
They play.
They explore.
They rebuild trust.
Bruno doesn’t see them as numbers. He sees them as individuals — each with a story, each deserving of dignity.
He often says the greatest reward is watching a frightened dog slowly regain confidence. Watching posture change. Watching tails rise. Watching eyes soften.
That moment when fear is replaced by joy — that is the real victory.
Adoption, But With a Promise
While many dogs stay at the ranch long term, some are adopted into new homes.
But Bruno is careful.
Adoption is not about convenience. It is about commitment.
Families must promise to provide stability, care, and lifelong responsibility. Only then does he allow a dog to leave his protection.
Because rescue doesn’t end when a dog walks out the gate.
It ends when that dog is truly safe.
