From Chains to Cuddles: The Heartwarming Rescue and Transformation of Ziva the Terrier Mix

When Barbara Zuluaga first laid eyes on a photo of a small, scrappy puppy, she couldn’t help but wonder what breed it could be. “I thought she might be a Chihuahua or another tiny breed,” Zuluaga, a board member of A Chance to Bloom Dog Rescue in Houston, Texas, recalled. But the puppy, covered in mange and looking much worse for wear, was hard to identify.

At just eight months old, Ziva, as she was later named, arrived at the BARC Animal Shelter in Houston in April, weighing only 12 pounds—significantly underweight for her age. It was immediately clear that she was a Staffordshire terrier mix, but her condition was dire.

Ziva had been found chained to a tree in a Houston neighborhood. Severely malnourished and infested with mange, she was a shadow of the healthy pup she should have been. Her body was covered with sores, and her paw pads were raw, a painful result of constantly rubbing against the rough ground.

Her physical state was heart-wrenching, but what struck the rescuers even more was Ziva’s fear of people. She trembled uncontrollably, avoiding eye contact and recoiling whenever anyone tried to approach her. It was evident that she had endured immense suffering, and the trauma had left deep emotional scars.

“It’s a heartbreaking story, and unfortunately, it’s not unique,” Zuluaga explained. “For a dog to suffer from severe mange and malnutrition, they’ve likely been through an extended period of pain and neglect.”

Moved by Ziva’s plight, Zuluaga took the pup from the shelter and brought her to a local veterinarian for immediate care. Stephanie Williams, a compassionate veterinary technician, quickly grew attached to Ziva. “It saddened me to think about her leaving, and I wanted to help her heal,” Williams shared. “I felt a strong connection to her, so I offered to foster her.”

Ziva’s life began to change. Under the care of Williams, Ziva slowly regained her strength. During the next two months, Ziva gained weight, grew a healthy coat of fur, and learned what it was like to experience life as a dog. “She learned about eating from a dog bowl, drinking from a water bowl, sleeping in a bed, and even jumping onto the couch,” Williams said. “She overcame so much, and I’m so proud of how far she’s come.”

Ziva’s transformation was nothing short of amazing. Her confidence grew as she began to trust people again, and her playful, affectionate nature began to shine through. Though many were eager to adopt her, Zuluaga was careful in selecting the right family—one who could help Ziva with her anxiety and provide the stability she needed.

Eventually, the perfect match was found. A woman reached out after hearing Ziva’s story, feeling a deep connection with the dog’s journey. This woman, Cassie Rogers, had experience rehabilitating dogs and was the ideal adopter. Zuluaga knew that Ziva had finally found the loving home she deserved.

Last weekend, Ziva, now renamed Roxy, moved into her new home in Fort Worth, Texas. “Roxy is thriving,” Rogers shared. “She sticks close to me; I’ve become her mom.” The bond between Roxy and Rogers grew stronger every day. “She’s starting to play with toys, adores mealtimes and treats, loves cuddling with us on the couch, sleeps in the bed, gives kisses, and enjoys running around with the big dogs,” Rogers added. “I’m absolutely in love with her.”

Roxy’s transformation—from a frightened, neglected puppy chained to a tree to a joyful, loved family member—serves as a powerful reminder of the impact kindness and patience can have on a vulnerable animal. Her story is a testament to the resilience of dogs and the incredible difference a caring person can make in their lives.

Now, Roxy is living the life she was always meant to have: full of love, play, and comfort. Her journey from a life of fear to one of joy highlights the incredible bond between humans and animals. This once-forgotten dog now has everything she could ever need—a warm bed, a loving family, and a future filled with happiness.

It’s a heartwarming tale that shows the power of compassion and the importance of giving animals a second chance. For Roxy, the rescue was only the beginning of her story. She now has a forever family, and a brighter future ahead.
