A Second Chance: Abandoned Bulldog Finds Hope and Healing in Florida

On one of the hottest days of the year in Pompano, Florida, Officer Angela Laurella rushed to a distress call that would change the life of a helpless dog. The call described two dogs left tied to poles on a desolate street, and with temperatures soaring past 100°F, every second counted.

When Officer Laurella arrived at the scene, the sight was heart-wrenching. One of the dogs, a frail gray bulldog, was tethered to a pole with a short leash, barely long enough to move even a few inches. The poor dog was emaciated, dehydrated, and covered in signs of neglect. His bones and ribs were clearly visible beneath his thin skin. This bulldog, whom Officer Laurella named Liam, was in urgent need of help.

Amy Roman, the president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, explained the situation in detail: “He was tied to a pole with a very short leash. He was in bad shape—his body was just skin and bones.” But what struck Officer Laurella and the onlookers the most was Liam’s response when approached. Despite his suffering, Liam reached out with trust, gently placing his paw into Laurella’s hand as if to say, “Please, help me.”

Recognizing Liam’s immediate need for medical attention and a safe place, Officer Laurella quickly contacted Amy Roman’s rescue organization. Roman, although already overwhelmed with animals in their care, immediately agreed to take Liam in. This was the first step toward a brighter future for the dog who had endured so much.

Once in Roman’s care, Liam’s healing journey began. The 17-pound bulldog, who had been a shadow of his former self, slowly started to regain his strength. Several veterinary visits followed, and Liam was treated with the utmost care. Roman and her team began feeding him hourly, providing him with nourishing meals such as boiled chicken and rice to help him recover. Liam’s body, which had been weakened from starvation and neglect, was gradually adjusting to the nourishment.

“He’s showered with affection,” Roman shared, delighted by Liam’s eagerness to heal. Despite the trauma he had experienced, Liam’s gentle nature never changed. “He loves everyone. He’s not aggressive at all, despite everything he’s been through. His ability to forgive and show gratitude is remarkable,” Roman said.

As Liam continued his recovery, it was clear that his spirit was unbroken. The resilient bulldog, who had once been left to die on the streets, was now blossoming into a healthy and happy dog, surrounded by love and care. His heartwarming transformation became a symbol of hope for all the animals in need and a reminder of the importance of rescue work in communities across Florida.

Unfortunately, Liam’s situation is not unique. Across the state, many animals are abandoned or surrendered by pet owners who are overwhelmed by circumstances or unable to provide the care their pets need. Shelters and rescue organizations, already stretched thin, struggle to keep up with the demand for help. Roman urges pet owners who can no longer care for their animals to reach out to local shelters or rescue groups before making the difficult decision to give up their pets. Liam’s story serves as a powerful reminder that every animal deserves a chance at a better life, and sometimes, that chance comes in the form of rescue.

As Liam continues to heal physically and emotionally, his playful personality shines through. He eagerly seeks attention, loving to be surrounded by people. His transformation from a broken and neglected dog to a joyful, affectionate companion is a testament to the power of love and care. “I believe dogs like Liam teach us important lessons about resilience, forgiveness, and second chances,” said Roman. “His story is a renewal of faith in the power of love to heal.”

Today, Liam eagerly awaits the day when he’ll find a forever family—a family that will cherish him and continue to show him the love and care he deserves. His story, though born from pain and abandonment, is now one of hope, healing, and the promise of a bright future.

Liam’s journey from a street-bound, neglected dog to a thriving, happy companion is a powerful reminder that every animal has the potential for transformation. With compassion, commitment, and the willingness to act, we can give animals like Liam the chance they need to heal and live a life full of love and joy. Every rescue counts, and every second chance can make a world of difference.

Liam’s new chapter is just beginning, and as he continues to grow stronger, it’s clear that the love and kindness he has received will stay with him forever. He’s no longer the lonely, neglected dog tied to a pole in the heat of the day. He’s a beloved companion, ready to embrace the love of a family and live out his days in comfort and peace.
