In January, Brittany Faske, a dedicated volunteer with the Houston-based rescue organization All Dogs Official Rescue Enterprise (ADORE), received a call that would change the life of one injured dog forever. A construction worker had discovered a Pit Bull hiding among some bushes in Houston, Texas. The dog appeared to be severely injured, particularly around his face, and was clearly frightened, unwilling to let anyone come near.

Without hesitation, Brittany rushed to the scene, unsure of what she would find. When she arrived, she discovered the dog lying next to a ditch, surrounded by discarded food and old tires. It was immediately clear that his condition was much worse than she had imagined. At first, Brittany feared that the only way to relieve his suffering might be to end his life through humane euthanasia.
Brittany later described the heartbreaking sight to The Dodo, “This once-majestic dog was reduced to a shadow of his former self. His ribs and bones were clearly visible, and he was covered in dirt, weak and broken.” Despite the dog’s distress and the growls he made as she approached, Brittany didn’t hesitate. She knew the dog had suffered immensely, but she was determined to help him.
As she carefully moved closer, the sight became even more harrowing. The dog’s nose and snout were missing, replaced by a mangled piece of flesh that dangled unnaturally. The clean cut suggested this wasn’t an accident but perhaps the result of human cruelty. With the strong, foul odor of infection in the air, Brittany knew this dog, whom she would later name Apollo, needed immediate medical attention.
Brittany’s persistence and calm approach gradually won Apollo’s trust. She managed to get him into the car and rushed him to the veterinary clinic, unsure if he would survive the ride. Despite the immense pain he must have been in, Apollo lay down and even dozed off during the journey, a sign that he had a will to live.

At the clinic, further examinations revealed the extent of Apollo’s condition. In addition to his facial injuries, the poor dog was also suffering from heartworm, a potentially fatal condition where parasitic worms invade the heart tissue. With his life hanging in the balance, Brittany and the vet worked together to stabilize Apollo, offering him food and water to assess his strength and ability to recover. To their surprise, Apollo eagerly ate, showing signs of his resilience. As he rested his head on Brittany’s leg, she knew he wasn’t giving up.
“That’s when we realized Apollo was no ordinary dog,” Brittany shared. “His strength and will to survive were undeniable.”
Apollo underwent reconstructive surgery to repair his damaged nasal cavity, using a skin graft to help protect the area. While part of his upper jaw and some of his teeth had to be removed, the surgery allowed him to continue eating, drinking, and living a normal life. Throughout his recovery, Brittany focused all her efforts on helping him heal, but as the days went on, she realized that the bond between them had grown deeper. Apollo wasn’t just recovering physically—he was thriving emotionally as well.
Once he was stable, Brittany introduced Apollo to her other two dogs, a pair of elderly yet feisty males. She was worried about how her older dogs would react to the new addition, especially since they had protective tendencies. But to her surprise, Apollo quickly charmed his new companions, and they welcomed him into their pack with open paws.

As Apollo’s transformation continued, Brittany made the decision to adopt him officially. Despite the facial injuries that still marked his past, Apollo thrived in his new home. His repaired nose allowed him to breathe and smell as any other dog would, and his reconstructed jaw gave him the ability to play, eat, and enjoy life without limitations.
Now, Apollo is a joyful, energetic dog, relishing every moment with Brittany and his new canine family. He enjoys lounging in the sun, snuggling with Brittany, and playing with his new friends. Every Saturday, Apollo attends personalized training sessions at Total Control K9 College, where he learns new skills and enjoys the interaction with other dogs and handlers.
Through Brittany’s unwavering dedication and love, Apollo has not only healed physically, but he’s also overcome the emotional scars of his past. He has transformed from a traumatized, neglected dog into a happy, affectionate companion. “I’ve never met a happier dog,” Brittany reflected. “You can see the trust and love in his eyes every time he looks at you. It’s truly remarkable.”
Apollo’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals and the profound impact that compassion and patience can have. It highlights the incredible transformation that can happen when a dog is given the care, love, and attention they deserve. From his rough beginnings to his new life filled with joy and security, Apollo’s journey is proof that every animal deserves a second chance.

Today, Apollo is living the life he was always meant to have—full of love, adventure, and endless possibilities. His recovery is a testament to the incredible power of rescue and the life-changing impact of a little kindness. Thanks to Brittany’s dedication, Apollo is no longer a victim of cruelty, but a thriving, happy dog with a family who loves him.
For Apollo, the journey from fear and neglect to safety and happiness is nothing short of a miracle, and his story serves as an inspiration for anyone who believes in second chances.
