A Search for Safety
On a cold day in Suwałki, Poland, a tired stray dog was simply looking for a place to rest. His body was worn down from life on the streets, and instinct led him toward what looked like a warm patch of ground. What he didn’t know was that the surface beneath him had just been covered in fresh tar.
The moment he lay down, everything changed.
When the Ground Wouldn’t Let Go
The tar hardened quickly, gripping his fur and paws. The more he tried to move, the more trapped he became. Panic set in, but instead of giving up, the dog began to bark. Not loudly. Not frantically. Just enough to be heard.

That decision saved his life.
Voices That Answered
Nearby workers heard the sound and followed it. When they found him, they realized how serious the situation was. Somehow, the dog had managed to free his snout, allowing him to breathe and continue calling for help. They immediately contacted Joanna Godlewska from the Niczyje Animal Foundation, knowing this was not something they could handle alone.
Help arrived quickly.
VIDEO: How Farcik Was Rescued From a Deadly Tar Trap
A Careful Rescue
Police officers, firefighters, and animal rescuers worked side by side, taking their time to free the dog without causing further injury. The tar clung stubbornly, but patience won. When he was finally lifted free, exhaustion washed over him. He was safe—but his body had clearly suffered.
The First Steps Toward Healing
At the veterinary clinic, the full extent of his condition became clear. His body was weak. His fur was crawling with more than a hundred ticks. He had minor head injuries from his struggle. Slowly and gently, the medical team began cleaning away the tar, treating his wounds, and easing his pain.
For the first time in a long while, he could rest without fear.
Learning to Trust Again
The rescuers named him Farcik. Wrapped in warmth, given food, and allowed to sleep in peace, he began to regain strength. His recovery wasn’t fast, but it was steady. Each day, he stood a little longer. Walked a little farther. Looked at people with less uncertainty in his eyes.

Despite everything, Farcik hadn’t lost his will.
A Future That Looks Different Now
Farcik remains under the care of those who saved him, continuing his recovery at his own pace. One day soon, he will be ready for a home—one where warmth doesn’t come from dangerous ground, and help always arrives when he calls.
His story is a quiet reminder: sometimes survival depends on a single bark being heard, and a few people choosing not to ignore it.
Farcik didn’t ask for much.
Just safety.
And now, at last, he has it.
