Chained and Waiting for 145 Days, Sunsimi Refused to Give Up

Some dogs survive by moving forward.
Others survive by holding on.

Sunsimi’s story belongs to the second kind.

A Life Reduced to a Few Feet of Chain

After a traffic accident, Sunsimi lost the use of his back legs.

His elderly owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for him. With no alternatives, Sunsimi was left chained in one spot—day after day, for 145 days. Unable to walk, he dragged his body across the ground just to shift position.

Around his neck, a heavy iron chain remained tightly fastened. Over time, it pressed deeper into his skin, causing constant pain. Still, Sunsimi stayed where he was—quiet, alert, and waiting.

Someone Who Chose a Different Answer

Yoon Hee-soon was the one who finally noticed him.

She worked as a caregiver for the elderly and had seen vulnerability before. When she found Sunsimi, she was told the same thing others had been told: there was no real hope. Many believed euthanasia was the only option.

But when Sunsimi looked up at her, something was clear.

He wanted to live.

Instead of giving up, Yoon Hee-soon chose to try.

What the Doctors Discovered

At a specialized veterinary hospital, the situation became even more complex.

Examinations revealed a severe pelvic fracture—explaining why Sunsimi could not use his back legs. But that was only part of the problem.

Further testing brought devastating news.

Sunsimi was suffering from advanced heartworm disease. Ultrasound images showed multiple worms lodged in his heart and pulmonary arteries, placing enormous strain on his cardiovascular system.

The condition was life-threatening.

An Impossible Choice

To walk again, Sunsimi would eventually need pelvic surgery.
But anesthesia was extremely dangerous.

With heartworm disease this severe, even putting him to sleep for surgery could cause sudden cardiac failure. Operating on his bones first could cost him his life.

The veterinary team made a difficult decision.

Before anything else, Sunsimi’s heart had to be stabilized.

Heartworm extraction surgery—high-risk and delicate—became the first priority. Only after that would there be a chance to address his legs.

For Yoon Hee-soon, the decision was overwhelming.

She understood the risks. She worried about the cost. But more than anything, she worried about losing him—after he had already endured so much.

Still, she stayed.

The video ends as Sunsimi is prepared for heartworm surgery, the room quiet with tension and hope intertwined. There are no guarantees. Only determination, trust, and a promise not to abandon him now.

What Sunsimi’s Story Leaves Us With

Sunsimi’s journey does not end here.

It pauses—on the edge between fear and hope.

His story reminds us that compassion is not measured by certainty, but by willingness. By choosing to protect life even when the outcome is unknown.

For 145 days, Sunsimi waited in silence.
Now, someone is finally fighting for him.

And sometimes, that choice alone is the beginning of healing.
