Sunsimi was one of those dogs.

A Small Body, Left Behind

The message arrived from Miryang, in South Gyeongsang Province.

A small dog had been seen lying on flattened cardboard, pulling himself forward with his front legs. His back legs did not move at all. They lay stiff behind him, thin and unmoving.

Sunsimi once belonged to an elderly woman who lived alone. When she became seriously ill and was hospitalized for a long time, she never returned home.

Sunsimi was left behind.

A heavy metal chain remained around his neck, pressed so tightly that it cut into his skin. With no one to help him, he stayed where he was—dragging himself across cardboard just to survive.

The Woman Who Refused to Give Up

Yoon Hee-soon was volunteering as a caregiver for the elderly when she discovered Sunsimi.

Many people told her the same thing: there was no hope. That a dog who could not walk would only suffer more.

She refused to accept that.

Instead of choosing euthanasia, she chose responsibility. She took Sunsimi in, determined to at least give him comfort—and if possible, a future.

Despite everything, Sunsimi wanted to live. He ate eagerly. His tail wagged whenever Hee-soon entered the room, as if greeting the best moment of his day.

Answers That Made Everything More Complicated

At a specialized veterinary hospital in Seoul, the truth became clear.

Sunsimi’s pelvis was fractured. His spine had suffered severe trauma. These injuries explained why his hind legs were paralyzed and misshapen from long-term muscle loss.

Then came the most frightening diagnosis.

Sunsimi was heavily infected with heartworm.

The parasites crowded his pulmonary arteries and heart, causing enlargement and dangerously weakened circulation. Any anesthesia—any major surgery—could stop his heart instantly.

Doctors faced an impossible choice.

To walk again, Sunsimi would eventually need orthopedic surgery. But operating now could kill him. His heart was too fragile.

So they chose the only path forward.

First, they would fight the heartworm.

Medication. Monitoring. Careful preparation. Only after stabilizing his heart could they even consider repairing his broken body.

Walking Toward the Unknown

After two weeks of intensive treatment, Sunsimi returned to the hospital.

This time, it was for heartworm extraction surgery—a procedure filled with risk, but also with hope. Hee-soon and her sister stayed close, speaking softly, holding his gaze, praying quietly.

Sunsimi did not resist.

The final images show him being wheeled into the operating room—small, calm, and brave.

Not walking yet.
But moving forward.
