A Cry That Carried Through the Quiet

It started with a sound that didn’t belong to the stillness of the afternoon.

A mother dog stood near the edge of a narrow drainage canal, barking again and again with a tone that was different from the usual calls dogs make. It wasn’t territorial. It wasn’t playful.
