A Stray Dog Struggling to Survive
On the streets, many animals quietly endure suffering that few people ever notice.
Zhuzha, a stray dog estimated to be about two years old, had been wandering through the city for months with an alarming condition. Her abdomen had grown abnormally swollen, making every step difficult and exhausting.
She moved slowly, breathing heavily as if her body was carrying a weight far too heavy for her small frame.
Despite the visible distress, Zhuzha had managed to survive on the streets for a long time. Volunteers noticed that she had a small ear tag indicating she had already been spayed, meaning she had previously been part of a trap-neuter-return program.
But something was clearly very wrong.

A Dangerous Diagnosis
Concerned volunteers decided to bring Zhuzha to a veterinary clinic for a full examination.
Blood tests and medical evaluations soon revealed the reason behind her growing belly.
Zhuzha was suffering from heartworm disease, a serious parasitic infection known medically as dirofilariasis.
The parasites had affected her heart and circulatory system, causing her body to accumulate large amounts of fluid inside her abdomen — a condition called ascites.
The veterinarian explained that without treatment, Zhuzha’s condition could become fatal.
To relieve the pressure and save her life, the veterinary team performed a delicate medical procedure.
Using sterile equipment, they carefully drained the fluid from Zhuzha’s abdomen.
The result shocked everyone.
More than 10 liters of fluid were removed from the body of the small dog.

As the fluid drained away, her abdomen visibly shrank, and the immense pressure inside her body was finally relieved.
But the treatment was far from over.
Zhuzha remained at the clinic under close supervision, receiving medication and supportive care to stabilize her heart and allow her body to recover.
The First Signs of Recovery
Just ten days after the procedure, something encouraging happened.
Zhuzha began to feel stronger.
She was able to go for short walks on a leash and showed a renewed interest in food. Her eyes looked brighter, and the exhaustion that once weighed on her seemed to be slowly fading.
The dog who had struggled to move now seemed eager to explore again.
A Remarkable Transformation
After four weeks of treatment and care, Zhuzha was finally ready to leave the clinic.

The dramatic swelling that once defined her appearance had completely disappeared. Her body looked lighter, healthier, and far more comfortable.
Back at the rescuer’s home, Zhuzha began adjusting to a new environment filled with safety and kindness.
She met other dogs, learned to relax, and slowly discovered what it felt like to live without constant pain.
A New Chapter of Life
Today, Zhuzha’s life is very different from the one she once endured on the streets.
She now enjoys walks in the park, runs freely, and greets people with curiosity instead of exhaustion.
Although she will need lifelong heart medication to manage her condition, Zhuzha has been given something incredibly valuable.
A second chance.
While she waits for a permanent adoptive family, she is surrounded by care and compassion — something every animal deserves.
A Message of Hope
Zhuzha’s story carries an important message.
Even small acts of kindness can change the fate of a vulnerable life.

When communities come together to help animals in need, suffering can turn into recovery, and despair can become hope.
And for Zhuzha, that hope has already begun. 🐾
