In the quiet streets of Spain, where the end of hunting season marks a heartbreaking fate for many greyhounds, one dog named Matilda found an unexpected lifeline. Known as galgos, these dogs are often used in hunting, and at the end of the season, many are discarded like trash, left to face a cruel and lonely death. But Matilda’s story was about to take a turn — one filled with hope, care, and the compassion that these beautiful creatures deserve.

Matilda’s condition was heartbreaking. She was emaciated, with her bones visibly protruding beneath her thin, frail skin. She was starved, covered in ticks, and barely clinging to life. Yet, it was in the depths of her suffering that she experienced something she had long been deprived of: the chance to be saved.
As Matilda wandered the streets, desperate and alone, a group of compassionate young people spotted her. Moved by her condition, they immediately reached out to Tina Solera, the founder of Galgos del Sol, an organization devoted to rescuing and rehabilitating galgos. Tina, who was nearby, didn’t hesitate for a moment. She rushed to the scene, hoping to save Matilda, but the poor dog was frightened and defensive after so much trauma. Without a muzzle, Tina found herself at risk as Matilda began to bite out of fear.
But the group of young people didn’t shy away. They worked together to safely place Matilda into a crate, despite the chaos and the dog’s desperate cries. “The screaming and crying was so stressful,” Tina later shared on Facebook. “But what a brave bunch of young ones who helped me. Hopefully, they’ll become ambassadors for the galgos.” The young volunteers’ courage marked the beginning of Matilda’s rescue.

Once Matilda was secured, Tina rushed her to a nearby hospital. The emotional toll of the rescue was overwhelming, and Tina couldn’t help but wonder if the cries she heard from Matilda were from pain or fear. “In the last hour, I’ve aged about 30 years,” Tina said, sharing the anguish she felt during the rescue. “It makes you feel useless.”
Matilda was in dire condition when she arrived at the hospital. She was dangerously underweight, feverish, and covered in ticks. Despite these physical challenges, Tina’s hope never wavered. Matilda was given fluids, pain relief, and underwent full-body scans to check for broken bones. Miraculously, no serious injuries were found, but Matilda was still far from being out of danger.
Days passed, and slowly but surely, Matilda began to show signs of recovery. While she still struggled with emotional trauma, her physical health began to improve. Regular meals, hydration, and treatment for tick-borne illnesses gave her the strength to heal. And then, one of the most significant milestones in her recovery came: Matilda wagged her tail for the first time since her rescue. That simple, yet profound gesture was a symbol of her resilience, and for Tina, it was a moment of triumph.

“She’s just a pup who has already been to hell and back,” Tina said, reflecting on Matilda’s tough start in life. “But now, she’s on the road to recovery, and it’s a beautiful thing to witness.”
Though Matilda is still insecure, Tina believes that with time and patience, she will continue to heal emotionally as well. “She’s still insecure, but day by day, she’s getting a bit better,” Tina shared, hopeful that Matilda will one day find the confidence to live her life to the fullest.
Galgos del Sol was born out of Tina’s encounter with a stray galgo, and since then, the organization has become a beacon of hope for hundreds of dogs in need. It rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes galgos, podencos, and mixed-breed dogs, providing them with the care they deserve. Today, the organization cares for around 150 dogs, helping them find new homes where they can live happy and healthy lives.
Matilda’s journey, from the streets of Spain to a life of care and compassion, is a reminder of the power of kindness. It’s a testament to the incredible difference that one organization, and one person, can make in the life of a dog who has been left behind. Matilda may have been abandoned and forgotten, but thanks to the dedicated volunteers and rescue organizations like Galgos del Sol, she now has a second chance at life.

Matilda’s story, shared with the world, also serves as a call to action: a plea to recognize the worth of every dog, no matter their breed or past. These dogs are not disposable — they deserve love, care, and the opportunity to live the life they were meant to.
As Matilda continues her recovery, there’s one thing that’s certain: her future is now filled with love, and with that love, she will continue to grow stronger each day.
